How usable is avatar-based communication training in VR?

Forty-seven participants ran through avatar-based communication training in immersive VR and rated the experience: how usable it felt, how clear the instructions were, how good the avatars looked and how hard the session was to get through.

Where this evidence ends

What this shows

  • People found the training usable: 4,38 out of 5 for perceived usability, from 47 participants.
  • Instructions were generally clear (4,14/5) - the interface did not get in the way of the exercise.
  • Frustration stayed low (2,21/10) at a moderate workload (4,60/10).
  • Avatar quality was rated the weakest of the three (3,90/5) - useful, and the most obvious thing to improve.

What this does not show

  • It does not show that people LEARNED more than they would from another format. Usability is not learning effectiveness.
  • It does not show any change in real-world behaviour after the training.
  • It says nothing about patient outcomes.
  • It is not psychometric validation of AI competency scores - that work is separate and still in progress.

Limitations

This is an internal evidence summary, not a peer-reviewed publication. We are stating that plainly because the difference matters to anyone deciding whether to trust the numbers.

  • Not peer-reviewed. The results have not been through external review.
  • Self-reported. Participants rated their own experience; nothing here is an objective measurement of performance.
  • One platform, one format. The study covers avatar-based training in immersive VR, not the browser version and not other tools.
  • The non-VR subgroup was small (6 people) - too small to draw comparisons from, and we do not draw any.
  • No control group and no follow-up, so nothing here speaks to durability of any effect.
