Healthcare communication, practised before you are in the room

You practise breaking difficult news, seeking consent and talking to a patient in strong emotion - with an AI avatar, in the browser or in VR, with feedback after each conversation.

When this module helps

The diagnosis is clear and the words are not. You have had this conversation before and it still comes out too fast, too technical or too careful, and the patient leaves with half of it. There is nowhere safe to rehearse this. The ward is not that place, and neither is a real consultation. Here you practise the conversation itself - as many times as you need, with an avatar rather than a person.

A sample conversation

1

Opening the consultation

You sit down with a patient who already suspects the news is not good, and you choose how much to say in the first sentence.

2

Saying the difficult part

You give the news in plain words and then stop, so the patient has room to take it in before you continue.

3

The reaction

The avatar responds with fear, anger or silence, and you answer without retreating into medical detail.

4

What happens next

You check what the patient has understood, answer the question behind the question and agree the next step together.

What you practise

Breaking difficult news

You practise saying the difficult part clearly and early, in words the patient can follow, instead of burying it inside a long explanation.

Plain language

You practise replacing clinical terms with the words the patient uses, and checking what they have understood rather than asking whether they understood.

Responding to strong emotion

Fear, anger, tears or silence in the room. You practise responding without escalating the emotion and without cutting the conversation short.

Consent conversations

You practise explaining options, risks and alternatives so the patient can decide, and recognising the moments when they have not really decided at all.

Talking with families

Relatives ask, doubt and decide alongside the patient. You practise giving them clear information and holding the boundaries of the conversation.

Staying steady under time pressure

The consultation is short and the waiting room is not. You practise keeping the conversation structured when there is less time than the situation needs.

What you get after each conversation

Full transcript

The whole conversation is written down, so you can find the exact sentence where the patient stopped following you and see why it happened there.

Rating against criteria

The conversation is assessed against the criteria of this module: clarity, empathy, structure and whether you checked what the patient understood.

What to say differently

For the moments that did not land you get a concrete alternative - another way to open, to name the diagnosis or to answer a question you cannot fully answer.

What to practise next

You get a recommendation for the next scenario, so you move on to consent or a family conversation instead of repeating the same case.

Delivery formats

Web simulation

You hold the conversation in a browser, with no headset required. A low-barrier way to try a scenario and to repeat it whenever there is time.

VR simulation

The same scenario in a headset: you stand in the room with the avatar. The higher pressure brings the practice closer to a real conversation.

Blended learning

You practise in simulations between workshop or coaching sessions, and the results of those conversations become material to discuss with a trainer.

Enterprise path

A rollout across the organisation: scenarios adjusted to your context, access for many teams and results that can feed the Digital Twin profile.

Who it is for

Doctors

You give diagnoses, seek consent and answer questions that have no clean answer. Here you practise those conversations without a real patient in the room.

Nurses

You are often the person left with the patient after the news, and with the questions that come afterwards. You practise those conversations here.

Medical teams

A whole ward or clinic can work through the same scenarios, and a manager view shows who has practised and which modules are complete.

Educators and trainers

You run communication classes and need practice between them. Simulations combine with your workshop, and the conversations become material to discuss.
